Most homeowners approach this as a preference question. It usually is not. For any given roof surface, the geometry narrows the field before taste enters the picture — and the expensive mistakes in roofing come from ignoring that.
Pitch decides first
Roof pitch is the rise over 12 inches of run. A 4:12 roof rises 4 inches per foot. This single number rules systems in or out:

The single most common roofing mistake
Asphalt shingles installed on a porch roof, a flat addition, or a rowhome main roof. Shingles shed water downhill — they do not seal against standing water. On a low-slope surface, water backs up under the tabs by capillary action and gets in. It typically shows up as a leak within a couple of winters, and the fix is tearing it off and installing membrane.
Asphalt shingle
The default for most pitched residential roofs in Pennsylvania, and for good reason.
Strengths: lowest up-front cost, widest color and profile selection, fast installation (most homes are a one-day tear-off and install), simple to repair, and every roofing company can work on it.
Limitations: shortest lifespan of the three, vulnerable to hail bruising, and genuinely sensitive to attic ventilation — a shingle roof over a starved attic bakes from underneath and can fail years early.
Choose it when: your roof is pitched, you want the best balance of cost and performance, or you may not be in the house for another thirty years.
Three-tab vs. architectural
Three-tab is the old flat single-layer shingle — cheaper, thinner, roughly 15 to 20 years, and lower wind ratings. Architectural (dimensional) shingle is layered, heavier, carries better wind ratings and longer warranties, and looks substantially better. The price difference is modest relative to the total job. Architectural is the right answer for nearly every homeowner.
Standing seam metal
Vertical panels locked together at raised seams, with the fasteners concealed beneath the seam rather than exposed to weather.
Standing seam is not the same as corrugated metal
Exposed-fastener corrugated panels — the ribbed metal on barns and sheds — are held down by screws through the face, each with a rubber washer that degrades in sunlight. Those washers are a maintenance item, and eventually a leak at every screw. Standing seam hides its fasteners entirely, which is most of why it lasts. They are different products at different prices, and conflating them causes real confusion when comparing quotes.
Strengths: 50+ year service life, excellent wind performance, sheds snow and ice cleanly, non-combustible, reflects heat, works down to low pitches where shingle cannot go, and may earn an insurance discount with some carriers.
Limitations: two to three times the cost of asphalt, requires a crew that specifically does metal work, panels are formed to length so lead times are longer, repairs are more specialized, and oil-canning — slight waviness in flat panel areas — is a normal cosmetic characteristic rather than a defect.
Choose it when: you plan to stay in the home long term, you have low-slope sections or outbuildings, or you want to buy a roof once.
EPDM rubber membrane
A single-ply synthetic rubber membrane for flat and low-slope surfaces — porch roofs, additions, rowhome mains, commercial decks.
Strengths: designed for standing water, seams heat-welded or bonded into a continuous surface, flexible through freeze-thaw cycling, straightforward to patch, and cost is driven by area rather than pitch.
Limitations: not for pitched roofs, appearance is utilitarian, and it is genuinely installation-sensitive — nearly all failures occur at seams, edge terminations, and penetrations rather than in the field of the membrane.
Choose it when: the surface is below about 2:12. At that point it is not really a choice.
Drainage matters more than material here
"Flat" roofs are never truly flat — they are pitched slightly toward drains or scuppers. When we replace a flat roof that has been ponding, correcting that drainage is part of the job. Installing a new membrane over the same standing-water problem just resets the clock on the same failure.

Is metal actually worth it?
Run it per year rather than per job. If asphalt lasts 28 years and metal lasts 55 at two and a half times the price, the annual cost is closer than the sticker suggests — metal often comes out slightly ahead, before counting the second tear-off you avoid.
The catch is that you only capture that if you own the house long enough. The honest test is simple: if there is a real chance you sell within ten years, asphalt is the better financial decision. If this is where you intend to stay, metal usually wins, and it stops being a recurring decision.
Mixing systems on one house
Very common, and often correct. A typical Pennsylvania home might carry architectural shingle on the main pitched roof, EPDM on the flat porch or addition, and standing seam on a low-slope section or a detached garage. Each surface gets the system its geometry calls for.
